VOLUME IV, NUMBER 16 Bros,
Once again, we had the most delicious hot meat dinner at our monthly Lodge meeting, thanks to our Kosher caterer extraordinaire, Bro Lowell Michelson. It is a safe bet to say that we are the best fed Lodge in the world in the entire history of the Order! A big thanks and Yasher Koach to Bros Lowell and Cyril Sulski.
Our thanks to Bros Seth Weisblatt and Jeff Romick who are in the process of improving our website, including head shots of our members in the Directory.
Thanks to Bro Boris Gremont for obtaining our new sleek blue kippot, with a bold HOD logo in white. Wear it with pride to your shul and Jewish events, to encourage awareness of HOD.
Come and join a community-wide celebration at the JCC on May 6,
from noon to 4pm.Fun for the whole family
At our last Lodge meeting, our speaker Dawn Strauss shared with us the compelling and very moving story of how Children's Medical in Dallas saved the life of her infant daughter Shayna, who was born with a serious heart condition. Shayna is now a healthy, happy, active 11 year old.
In gratitude, she has created the TEAM SHAYNA DALLAS/JERUSALEM ACADEMIC EXCHANGE, which is a medical and technical partnership between Children's in Dallas and the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Doctors who specialize in pediatric cardiology share their best cutting-edge practices and research with each other.
Email from Dawn: A big thank you for inviting me to come speak at your HOD meeting. What a group! I felt so welcomed and was just overwhelmed by your kind words during the introduction. I am so grateful for the opportunity to get my message out and to increase awareness for this community project. This is my website so you can follow us and our progress. www.redballoonevent.org/goto/teamshayna2018

Anshai Torah's Project 613 is the writing of a Torah Scroll in honor of Wende Weinberg of blessed memory. On Sunday afternoon, Parker Road was closed to traffic as the congregation joyfully walked with the Torah under a Chuppah from Rabbi Weinberg's home to Anshai Torah. There was a moving ceremony at the shul attended by almost a thousand people to dedicate the Torah in memory of Wende Weinberg z"l.
Rabbi Zerach Greenfield, from Israel, was the Sofer (Scribe). Among the laws and interesting facts he shared included the following: the Sofer must use a feather and use special ink; there are about 305,000 letters in the full Torah; a Torah scroll may only be written on parchment from the skin of a kosher animal; before beginning to write a Torah scroll, the scribe must mark off the lines (scoring) on the parchment with slight grooves; no letter must touch another letter; a computer scan is used to make sure that all the letters are included, are in the proper place, and that no mistakes have been made; and much more!
